The Swamajayanthi Grama Swarozgar Yojana (SGSY) was introduced nearly two years ago in April 1999, combining all the major anti-poverty prog rammes. The SGSY ushers a change from the buns approach of earlier programmes to a need-based approach. The essence of each of the programmes has been taken to form the new programme.
This includes the con¬cept of subsidised credit of IRDP, legions formation as in the case of DWCRA, providing technical acumen such as in TRYSEM and providing tool kits as in S1TRA. The programme requires the coordination of the banks, DRDA, elected representatives and government officials for more effective implementation. How¬ever, the turn of such coordination in IRDP outline has not been too happy. So, to what excogita te will this coordination be improved in the! case of SGSY proposal? The DRDA has to play an eventful role in the coordination programme. The elected representatives and the plentiful land¬lords at the local level play an important role in the selection of the beneficiaries.
