In Christian ethics precept of charity is the main principle, the supreme law of life. "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all your soul ... You shall love your neighbor as yourself" (Jesus Christ).
The commandment of charity is the salvation of the soul of man, the unity of the people. It requires equal treatment of all people, including enemies.
Love for people is based on the ideal of God's love to people. This love of the merciful, the initiative.
Friedrich Nietzsche in his criticism of Christian ethics argued that merciful love is a means of masking selfishness, envy, acquiescing human frailties. According to Nietzsche, one must not love neighbor (ordinary), and "distant" future (higher, perfect).
